Once a thriving community supported by jobs in the steel, shipping and automobile industry, East Baltimore was a home to families, business owners, and faith and community-based institutions. Recent years have brought decline, neglect and decay. A new nonprofit organization was recently formed to lead the effort to return the community to its previous stature, and greatly improve the quality life for its residents. This organization is East Baltimore Development, Inc. (EBDI), and it has been working over the past year and a half to recreate a community where both residents and businesses thrive.

Realizing the promise of the New Eastside will require the demolition of existing housing stock. Built in its place will be a range of low income, affordable and market rate housing. This will require that some residents be relocated. EBDI is working with each household – including both homeowners and renters – to assist with relocation to a new home. 

Among other things, we are providing families with information about housing in affordable, desirable neighborhoods within and outside Baltimore City.  Each household will receive benefits based upon a formula that provides comparable replacement housing equal to or better than a family’s current housing. EBDI is also committed to working with residents who want to return to the new Eastside once housing construction is completed.
